Meetings with the school council, parents and pupils was the order of the day for the Commissioner at Holy Child Primary School in the Creggan on Tuesday (June 11).
This wasn’t the first engagement some of the pupils had with Chris Quinn as they had previously met him at the library exhibition ‘For Every Child Every Right’ in Derry last year.
The Commissioner enjoyed hearing about the wide range of programmes and support provided by the school in the parish of St Mary’s, including bespoke education to cater for children with additional needs.
Chris Quinn, said: “I was very honoured to be invited along to meet with the pupils, parents and staff of Holy Child Primary in Derry this week.
“This is a fantastic school set right in the heart of an amazing community. 
“It is very evident that staff ensure the children here have a variety of experiences during their time at the school so they can become independent and confident young people.
“Children from the school council told me all about the work they do which had included setting the school dinners menu and promoting child rights among their peer groups.”
The Commissioner continued: “It is fantastic to see the active involvement of young people in their education and community.”
Additionally, during the visit, the Commissioner observed the deteriorating state of the porta cabins, emphasising the urgent need for investment from the Department of Education.
The Commissioner pledged to address these concerns to ensure a clearer vision for the staff and pupils going into the new school term.
