Commissioner vows to continue conversation with Irish medium education leaders

14 June 2024

Set in the heart of Belfast city centre is Bunscoil Mhic Rheactain where the Commissioner had the honour of visiting on Thursday (June 13).

Principal Dr. Séamas Ó Donnghaile welcomed Chris Quinn to engage with students and staff, listening to their voices and concerns.

The students, aged four to eleven, showcased their musical talents, recited poetry, displayed their creative artwork, and eloquently questioned the Commissioner about his role and how he can support them in their educational journey.

Following a school tour, the Commissioner sat down with staff, parents, members of the Board of Governors, and Ulster University representatives to address the challenges faced by this inner-city Irish medium school.

Chris Quinn said: “I am very grateful for the invitation to Bunscoil Mhic Rheactain in the Newlodge, a place I hold dear from early on in my career at the Star Neighbourhood Centre.

“Witnessing the students’ proficiency in the Irish language here is fantastic however I am well aware of the underfunding within the sector and the need for investment to meet growing demands.”

In a recent ruling, Judge Tracey addressed the provision of Irish-medium education in Northern Ireland, underscoring its significance and the need for appropriate measures to ensure its accessibility and quality.

The Commissioner, added: “I would argue that we need to go further if children’s rights are to be fully protected. We heard accounts of issues with the lack of adequate services across health and education, as well as issues in relation to inspection and exams, with systemic changes needed to recognise that large numbers of children and young people who speak more than one language across the North of Ireland.

“Visiting schools like Bunscoil Mhic Rheactain highlights the positive impact of bilingual education on a child’s academic progress.

“As Commissioner, I will continue to engage with this sector to advocate for long-term strategic investments, ensuring parents can confidently choose bilingual education for their children.”
